As the year 2020 comes to a close, I have to muse over what the future may be like. Will we ever return to life as it was before the pandemic lockdown? And should we return to that life? Surely we have all been changed by the unprecedented events that have happened during these bittersweet months. I know, as the owner of Team Athey and Remarkable Property Management, it has taken a great amount of flexibility and resilience for our team to adapt.
As we emerge from this difficult time in our history, I hope we will each reflect on what we’ve learned. And that together we will create a society of hope based on love and compassion for each other.
Change has been forced upon us as we’ve learned to live in ways we never have before. For some of us that means we’ve been forced to slow down—to take days one at a time, or in some cases, an hour at a time. Others have been forced to face challenges they never dreamed their career would present before them. No industry or service arena escaped hardship. Some worked harder than they ever thought they could to save lives. Others worried about their mental health and their physical health, amid overwhelming financial burdens. Many did all this alone.
Yes, this past year has brought a profound shift in attitudes. It has required that we all walk together toward a future that may be unlike anything we were expecting.
For instance, as we’ve been forced to conduct ourselves and our business routines differently, I wonder if people will continue to work remotely, allowing people to live anywhere they wish.
And what about the human connection?
Will we ever return to crowded concert venues? Large weddings and birthday parties? Go out to eat at a moment’s notice without a mask? And, perhaps more importantly, will we ever shake hands again . . . or feel free to give each other a hug? Remember touch is a vital part of emotional health.
I hope these things will return.
Even though I must admit I do appreciate the virtual connection. I suspect we’ve all gotten used to virtual everything with online school, work meetings, worship services, and conferences.
Mark my words, film and video production industries are going to go through the roof. Why, even I know how to set up a zoom meeting invitation and have a special light to make me look my best. Before March, I’d never even thought of delving this heavy into video and social media to help Team Athey and our clients merge into this new business environment.
True, I don’t know what the future holds. No one does really. But I’m looking forward to it. I hope you are too.
