Behind the Scene

It’s 2021! Time to ring out the old and fling ourselves head first into the latest house trends. The good news is now that our homes have become the hubs of our lives, many exciting home decor changes lie ahead for us as we continue to adapt. From interiors to exteriors, here are just a few of many new inspired mindsets reflected in floor plans, furnishings, and living spaces.

In 2021, it’s all about being comfortable and feeling good in your own space. So let’s explore a few trends designed to not only optimize living environments, but to infuse a bit of joy, hope, and comfort into our daily lives.

NOT-QUITE-SO-OPEN FLOOR PLANS: Wide-open floor plans are great for entertaining, but let’s face it what we all need right now are creative solutions for dividing living areas so we can have privacy for online school classes, work meetings, and more. Knowing this, people are looking for creative ways to divide up space into cozy nooks. Bookshelves, sliding barn doors, and paneled room dividers are in demand this year.

USEABLE OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE: Whether dining, working out, gardening, or just relaxing, the backyard is now front and center for providing extra space. Think outdoor kitchens with wood-burning fireplaces, grills, and bars. Or gym/gardens complete with workout equipment, greenhouses, and sheds. Pergolas provide yet more space to commune and connect. Without a doubt, people will be transforming their lives and calming their spirits by getting creative with outdoor spaces in 2021.

MULTIGENERATIONAL LIVING: Challenging work schedules along with changing daycare and senior care needs have stretched many people and budgets thin. Not to mention all the job losses and economic struggles that many have faced. Therefore, it only stands to reason that Multigenerational Living would provide the best solution. Look to see more separate-but-together spaces such as, detached guest cottages, granny pods, carriage houses, and in-law cottages.

GERM FREE UPGRADES:

For a healthier, happier home, consider some of the new design trends like touch-free faucets and trash bins. You might also consider renovating to non-porous quartz and copper counters. Not only will these surfaces prevent the spread of germs, they can even kill them.

INDOOR PLANTS: Not since the 1970s have house plants been so popular. Considering all their many benefits such as filtering out pollutants and releasing oxygen, it’s no wonder people are filling their homes with fresh blooms, succulents, and plants of all varieties. Here are a few popular choices to get you started: Monstera, Snake Plant, Fishbone Cactus, Blue Star Fern, Bunny Ear Cactus, Velvet Calathea, String of Hearts, Chinese Money Plant, Fiddle Leaf Fig, and, of course, Ficus and Olive Trees.

RUSTIC VOGUE: How do you achieve this new design trend? Start with a balance of old and new reclaimed wood that naturally blends together. Think plenty of grain and texture— exposed beams, original floorboards, and paneled walls are but a few ways to get this look.

COUNTRY CHIC: Create a sanctuary of comfort with familiar patterns, vintage prints and motifs all from a simpler time. Cover furniture in slipcovers made of tactile fabrics including linen, velvet and cashmere. And create it all in muted pastel hues perfect for cocooning. With all the warmth of Farmhouse, Country Chic furniture is not heavily painted, distressed or chipped, but rather crafted and multifunctional.

ULTIMATE GREY (17-5104) & ILLUMINATING YELLOW (13-0647): There’s a reason Pantone chose these two hues for their 2021 Colors of the Year. It’s because they’re absolutely beautiful. Together or apart, they send a soothing yet cheery message of hope, strength and optimism as we enter the new year.

EARTHY COLOR PALETTES: Naturally calming, color palettes that draw their influence from nature are back in a big way. This year consider welcoming hues of Rust, Bronze, Burnt Orange, Moss Green, Deep Red, and Golden Beige. Or if you prefer, soft aquas, ocean blues, and deep inky blues refresh and revive as a total room color or an accent wall.
